Year 1687, in March, the feast of the Snake
Edo Palace Chiyoda
Now the Tiger
Chiyoda Palace stood out in the black sky with its massive structure and its sloping roofs, but that night, under those roofs blacks, between the walls of the city, lost in a maze of doors and screens, was consumed during a disgrace that would have given the dramatic events of this story.
Throughout the day there was a bustle of guests for the feast of the Snake: Shogun and his family had organized a successful banquet of running water, where the nobles and the ladies were challenged to recite poetry whenever they were joined by a nice cup of sake on floating boats in the shape of dragons along the path of streams in the spring garden. It was an ancient tradition to ward off the spirits and purify, but eventually became an excuse to drink and recite rhymes licentious. For Sojiro was the first time took part in a banquet so sumptuous, was the wakashu of Togukawa-sama to invite to the ceremony. The boy was sitting along the artificial river, along with other comrades in arms, and had listened to the verses of great poets of the court, ladies and many Dayma realized for the occasion. He was touched to him, two or three times, having to raise a glass and recite a haiku. He dusted off the old Chinese poems and had some success for his erudition, but his voice made faint with emotion, was not reached the ears of all present and, flushed with embarrassment, he had to repeat the poem almost yelling. Anyway it was fun listening to the gossip of the court of the mouths of naughty boys his age, almost everyone already involved in relationships more or less serious. Sojiro last fifteen years he reached the middle of the month and then was planning to declare to his teacher, who had observed with his sly smile from the opposite bank for most of the time.
The evening had continued to close in the halls of the palace: the laughter, food, wine, lights, sounds and colors of a great party without end. When he realized he had drunk more than he can bear, Sojiro left the banquet rooms and went upstairs to go to bed. Only dreamed of taking off the dress and ceremonial plunge into a long sleep. Shortly before reaching the flat, Sato-sensei, two pages stopped him along the corridor. One held a lantern, the other handed him a letter, penned a few lines with beautiful writing for an invitation to meet Asahi-san in his room. An unusual gesture for a man so practical label, but it would have been rude to refuse and so, reluctantly, followed the two boys.
Asahi-san was still wearing her beautiful wedding dress, dark hakama and a sleeveless jacket with a dark green carved with motifs of the lotus flower. Sojiro sat down where he was expected and indicated that his guest decided to speak did not take long to realize that the man was drunk and thought he could take leave so quickly without the other way had to be offended.
"I am pleased that you decided to visit me, Ito-kun"
"Your request was so polished that I could not decline the invitation. Did you have something urgent to tell he could not wait for the dawn of tomorrow, Asahi-san? "
" Oh, what turns cold, my boy. Want to drink? "
" Thank you, big brother, but I think I drank just for today "
The man poured the sake into the glass itself and the boy stared with empty eyes.
"Asahi-san, is there anything I can do for you?"
seemed that his guest had forgotten how his presence for a moment, because it ravvenne and stared at him as if he expected to see him there.
"Your poems were wonderful: to quote the great Li Po with such certainty, really commendable. And your voice, that of a canary ... so young ... so childish. How old are you really, Ito-kun? They tell me that she seems much less "
" I will make fifteen short and, if nothing else, I would go back into my room and let it rest as you deserve, Asahi-san, "said that he got up and started to leave room, but he was harpooned by the flap of the hakama man, who watched from the bottom up like a dog abandoned by its master.
"Do not go, do not leave me here alone in pining another night without your warmth to keep me awake"
"Asahi-san, I thought my silence was a denial more than decent for your person, but since I am forced to say bad things with your inappropriate behavior, then you know that I have no transport sentimental to you and see you drunk begging for my company not only increases in me the belief that you're not the man to whom I wish to commend my youth. Ricomponetevi, mostly for yourself and for me that I did not leave you in the heart of what a state of gloomy sorrow "
The man put his hand to his face and laughed; Sojiro was disgusted by so much brutality and opened the shoji to exit, but the two pages who had accompanied him jumping up to his appearance and his hands to swords.
"What does that mean," asked the shocked boy.
"It means that our owner is not usually accept a 'no' for an answer and a brat like you just arrived from the countryside, should just be honored that the attention that our Lord asks him," said the bigger of the two, Sojiro pushing in the room: they fell back and the second was on him in a flash, depriving him of the swords. It was night, no one would come hearing screams or sounds of battle, to oppose groped Sojiro could only come out dead, so do not even try to rebel when Asahi-san came up, full of wine, and dissolved the obi.
staggered into the darkness of the hall silent, Ito Sojiro tried to reach his room. He had pain in his arms and back, there where the dogs hit him to immobilize had hurt between the buttocks, there was had been breached, and had pain in my heart, its spirit of a warrior wounded and humiliated, but however hard he tried try to imagine a different ending, did not understand how he could avoid what has just occorsogli. He might despise the message of Asahi-san, but would mean only postpone the inevitable, if not even more wicked man. He could fight, but it was three against one, and certainly, had prepared for such an occurrence. He did the only wise thing that was flashed while the events precipitate had tried to contain the damage and had not issued a single groan. It could not be said to have brought home the honor, but at least the skin.
What were the most stinging words of Asahi-san, when, with a satisfied grin had left him free to move "You should not feel remorse for having forced you to violence, Ito-kun, I forgive you."
Throwing cold on a futon, Sojiro wondered how he would face presented to the teacher the next day.
